UTILITY BOXES; AN OPPORTUNITY FOR WHAT IS UGLY

Every community has utility boxes in their downtowns.  It is generally agreed that these boxes are necessary and extremely ugly:

With the use of various means, the boxes can be transformed into another great tool for making your downtown more interesting:    Vinyl wrap is becoming more popular and less expensive. Several larger communities have already undertaken this type of project.     Vinyl can be used to provide opportunities for art or can be used as a "welcome" or "entrance" sign for your downtown:

If vinyl is not in your community's budget there are other options available including the use of various screening techniques:

Another option is to convince local artists to use the boxes as their canvas:

As most utilities are bigger bureaucracies than local governments, it may be difficult to gain their permission.  If your community has good working relationships with local utilities, this process will take significantly less time.  Just to be safe; start the discussion early with the utility and convince them of the benefit of being a good / cooperative partner within your community.

PARKS IN OR NEAR DOWNTOWN
Many smaller communities (at least in Illinois) have parks in or near their downtowns. I've come across several where the park serves as the town square.  Beyond the traditional slide and swing set, parks provide a great opportunity for a town to be unique for the benefit of its residents as well as visitors who may come to the downtown.

There are a ton of examples where communities have created very unusual and engaging parks.  Maybe your town should consider being one of them. For now; here is one example of an out of the ordinary park.
